Cardboard Canoe Achievements Post
Total Achievements: 17
Design Achievements:
• Define the Problem and Brainstorm Solutions
• Big Brain
• Criteria & Constraints
• Sketch Ideas
• Prototype Ideas
• Select an Approach
These can be viewed at Cardboard Canoe Design Phase
Build Achievements:
• Build It!- see pictures above
• The Early Bird Gets the Achievement -I'm claiming this achievement for my team because we worked the hardest to get our boat finished and had a usable product first.
Videographer-
Test Achievements:
• The Fastest - Awarded to the first team to reach the far side (25yds)
• The Farthest - Awarded to the team that can travel the furthest (laps)
• The Longest - Awarded to the team with the watercraft that floats the longest (multiple teams may be awarded this achievement if multiple boats remain afloat at the end of our competition period).
• Balance Master - Chase was able to stand for more than 5 seconds with me sitting in the boat
Reflection Achievements:
• Feedback -
+
-large surface area caused it to float w/o sinking more than 3 inches
-full taped inside allows water to enter inside without causing cardboard
change
-make sure we completely tape the bottom of the boat
- create a more efficient way to tape the sidewalls up
?
- Did water come in the corners of our boat of just the bottom?
-Would a fin have helped keep the boat straight?
!
-lots of surface area to keep it afloat
-include fin in future design to make steering easier.
• How Low Did You Go? - Our boat only sunk about 3' inches into the water when our pilot a.k.a. Chase Fischer who weighs roughly 135lbs, was inside of it. That means that because water is about 8.3454 pounds per gallon, our boat displaced about 16.2 gallons of water.
• Redesign - If we were to do another Carboard Canoe race next semester, what would you build? Draw from everything you experienced in your class and propose the most competative solution. Include a sketch with key features and dimensions labeled.
• (Make Your Own Achievement) - The only boat that didn't fall apart after more than 25 yards- This achievemnt was pretty self explanitory, our boat was the only one that could be salvaged and made it farther than 25 yards.
Here is our finished product. Its not really that heavy we just all wanted to the picture. |
The secret to our success... taped inside. |

Cardboard Canoe Design Phase
Important Features: sealed rolls of cardboard, 3' sidewalls, duct tape rope for pulling |
This is the boat design we used. |
Important Features: 12 inch sidewalls, curved up nose, flat bottom |
This is our pentagon design we did not use it. Important Features: pointed nose to cut through water, flat bottom, 12 inch sidewalls |
Four Quadrant Feedback
Castaway Design
+
-sealed and watertight can go underwater
-very strong
change
-shape of front to funnel/cut through water
?
-Can we paddle it?
-How sturdy is it?
!
-floats really well
The Pentagon Boat Design
+
-nose pointed and cuts through water
change
-how sturdy sidewalls are
?
-will the sidewalls fold in?
!
-goes fast through water.
The one we used
+
large surface area for maximum floatage.
change
how sturdy the sidewalls are
how we tape it together
?
Did water enter because of the hole in bottom or was there another reason?
If we do a cleaner cut will our boat last longer
!
-put fins in the bottom so it goes straight
